Fluidized Bed Microwave Heating Reactor

This unique fluidized bed microwave heating reactor is mainly applicable for partial oxidation and dry reforming of hydrocarbons. Furthermore, thermochemical conversion processes such as pyrolysis and gasification of biomass is also possible. The high power capacity of this setup is suitable for studying the microwave heating rate of different dielectric material.

Temperature range: up to 1200 °C
Pressure range: atmospheric
Power: 0 – 5 KW
Location: A-660.2.1

Fluidized Bed Thermogravimetric Analyzer

The newly developed fluidized bed thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) is the first equipment that combines both the fluidization and the weight measurement of the sample. The standard fluidized bed TGA can be used for studying kinetics and mechanism of gas-solid reactions, i.e. pyrolysis, combustion and gasification. The reactor can be fed by a wide range of solid samples, including solid fuels, biomass and solid waste. With different particle size and shapes, 5 g of the solid sample can be fluidized with different gas medium in the quartz reactor.

Main specifications
Temperature range: from 25 to 1200 °C
Pressure range: 1 atm
Heating rate: up to 50°C/min
Location: A-560

Induction Heating Fluidized Bed Reactor (IHFBR) Setup

There are two IHFBR setups that were designed and developed at PEARL.

Induction heating mechanism helps provide the required heat very fast while heat transfer coefficient in the fluidized bed is similar to that in large-scale reactors.

The IHFBR is an ideal setup to carry out extremely high temperature catalytic and non catalytic screening tests (Steam/dry reforming, gasification, co-combustion, pyrolysis, FCC, thermal cracking, …).

With unique operation of its lift tube, the IHFBR mimmicks feeding a solid feedstock (coal, biomass, waste, minerals, …) in industrial fluidized bed reactors.

Particle size distribution of the powders can range from nano-scale to micro-scale depending on the application.

Being connected to a multi-gas FTIR and a microGC, online gas analysis is easily performed.

The IHFBR is an excellent setup for high temperature hydrodynamic studies such as early prediction of defluidization state in fluidized bed reactors.

Plexiglass Fluidized Bed Test Unit

This Plexiglas and PVC fluidized bed is used for hydrodynamic tests when visual observation of the solids motion is required. It is also a flexible facility that can be modified to suit the needs of the investigation. The unit is equipped with two internal cyclones, in series, and a hepa filter installed on the effluent gas to efficiently recover the entrained particles. The facility is presently being adopted to develop instrumentation and to conduct tests on the influence of interparticle forces on gas-solid fluidization behavior and mixing/segregation of particles in bubbling and turbulent fluidized beds.
